RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Republicans dominated North Carolina political fundraising in the past campaign on the way to expanding their majorities in the General Assembly and getting their candidates governor and lieutenant governor elected for the first time since the 1980s.

Year-end campaign finance reports show new Gov. Pat McCrory's campaign committee raised $12.3 million during the election cycle compared with $4.3 million by Democratic rival Walter Dalton.

Dalton jumped into the race late and faced a tough primary, unlike McCrory.

The reports due late last week also show the state Republican Party outraising and outspending the state Democratic Party by a 2-to-1 margin.

Republican House Speaker Thom Tillis said he raised $1.7 million in the past two years, with most of the money going to other candidates and the state party.
